Social media platform offers voice to the voiceless. Some of popular social media platforms include twitter, Facebook, google+ and WhatsApp. Information shared on these platforms usually has a personal touch, since most account holders are individuals. These platforms takes the concept of freedom of expression to another level. Information is usually shared within seconds, anywhere and at any time.

Social media is not all safe. Fake news and rumours usually have a habit of spreading like wild fire. The social media platform is off late known for accommodating this kind of news. This platform is unregulated and it users are not held accountable for their actions. This freedom makes fake news to feel at home on these platforms.

Social media is a borderless platform that can be use by anyone. This gives foreigners a say into local matters. These individuals can incite us against each other without a care in the world. With the western perception of Africa, a small fire can be turn into an inferno. Therefore it is up to our local media house and other responsible Kenyans to be on the lookout for such fires. Local and international media needs to be on the same page to avoid chaos and confusion.

Kenyans on social media should also be responsible. This is our county therefore it is our responsibility to take care of it. We cannot let a few misguided individuals to divide a great nation for their selfish reasons. You cannot underestimate the power of a negative viral post, tweet or message. This kind of information could be a double edge sword sharp enough to tear us apart. It is your duty to drop such information to avoid it spreading. If unverified information goes viral then the truth will appears to be propaganda or a cover up story.

My message to all social media user is be the champion of peace. Your account, your voice. Don’t let a tweet, post or comment divide us.
